Books

Photobucket

This past April, when I travelled to Salt Lake City for the half marathon, I had the opportunity to spend lots of time at my sister Kristin's house (the same sister who came to visit over the weekend with her family). As I wandered through her home I took notice of her extensive collection of books. The walls were lined with bookcases; each and every room.

It made an impression on me. Her home was warm, cozy, and inviting. I knew that somehow I wanted to replicate that feeling in my own home. As it turns out, Donald was having the same thoughts (we often have the same thoughts).

My sister shared her secret. She collects most of her books from second hand stores and yard sales. Not only are they extremely inexpensive, but an old book has a certain charm to it.

Upon returning to Washington, Donald began browsing for books; making a point to stop at things like church rummage sales and old antique shops. He frequently comes home with armloads of books that he has purchased for only a few dollars. I love filling our bookcases with these old treasures as well as stacking piles of books here and there throughout the house.

I hope that building a large collection of literature will not only add a decorative charm to our home, but create an atmosphere for learning as well. A place where my children will feel inclined to pick up a book off the shelf and sit down for an afternoon of reading. And I hope that they will discover the joy that can be found within the pages of a good book.

Lisa, I have no doubt your home will be and actually already is what you hope for. First off, all your pictures taken in your home give such a feeling of warmth, coziness, and inviting. Your collection of books will only enhance that. And second, I noticed in your last post about your garden, Alexandra is holding a rather large book for a 6 year old. That's not a site everyone can say they have seen. The 6 year olds I know pick out books that can be read in a single, short setting. I remember your one post a long time ago, about Lex reading Romana. I was so impressed. Like I said, the 6 years old I know aren't reading books like thhat. You definitely have a positive influence of your family and clearly have spent time making learning fun for them.

Interesting. I just spent a bunch of time on-line buying used books of a favorite adolescent literature author--Patricia Beatty. I have about 10 books coming my way next week.

When we built our home, I had one long hallway filled with book shelves. it is my favorite spot in the house.

Our book collection is pretty sparse, but the kids love reading what we have. I'll have to start checking at yard sales.

Beautiful and so very YOU. What a great idea! I have a lot of books but they are hidden away in cupboards and closets. (Of course they look old in a very non-charming way though.)

Spencer also loves collecting books, although his favorites are not ones that the kids will pick up and read right now. They're all church related books. He's gotten a ton of them on E-Bay for super cheap.

His dream is to one day have a "library" in our next home. We went to the home of our Stake President a couple of years ago, and we sat in his library for the interview...I have to say it was pretty darn impressive, and I wished that I could have perused his collection.

Lisa, I love old books as well...actually I just love books, especially when I can take the jacket off and see the beautiful hardcover and spine...I think books are more beautiful that way.

I agree with all the other posters... I am sure that you are already creating the atmosphere you want in your house.
I, too, love having books everywhere. On our last move the movers said we had more boxes of books than anyone he had ever moved. Which made me proud and sad... people should have more books! I have stacks everywhere, mainly because I have ran out of bookshelves! In our forever house we want to have a library room with built in shelves.

I meant:

"'on' your family"

not

"'of' your family.

Oops. That's what comes when I don't proofread my stuff before I post it.

I like old books too. I like to find one on outdated subjects. Like the one I'm going to show you when you get here.

You have a house of warmth. I see that by what you write and take pictures of.
You CONTINUE to inspire me!

I heart books and what a great idea! Most of mine are current reads and don't have that classic look to them. I do thave the Harry Potter series front and center, though, cause they're so pretty. And I agree with the first commenter, that I'm sure it only makes your home MORE comforting and cozy and lovely!

I do the same thing! We have books ALL over our house, too. I am running out of space to put them!

Our local library takes donated books then has a big used book sale every few months.

I love books, but I love to pass them on. I am not the kind of reader that reads one book over and over. Once I have read it I want to see someone else enjoy it. I have a couple of friends who swap books. We have a little store down the road where we can take books and swap them or buy them and the money goes to the literacy campaign. I can spend hours in our new library.

Lisa?

Is that YOU???

The same girl who wasn't sure if she wanted to borrow a few of my second hand books, that I have lovingly gathered from Used Book Stores and Goodwill?

The one who wasn't sure about reading my "used" Beverly Cleary books?????

You have no idea how pleased I am.

And you are free to borrow any of my wonderful pre-loved books anytime!

P.S. I have a used Hard Backed copy of "Gone with the Wind" in the bookshelf in my dining room if you are interested in borrowing it.

I love it! I have a ton of really old music, too, which I love. Like over 100 years old.
