An Artist and His Art

Grandpa and Walt, working on Pirates of the Caribbean.

My grandfather, Claude Coats, was a Disney artist and imagineer for over 50 years. He took part in creating timeless classics such as Snow White, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland, as well as Disneyland rides including The Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion, and It's a Small World. He truly was a Disney legend and his art continues to inspire.

With that said, I am pleased to announce the opening of ClaudeCoats.com . Prints from his private art collection are available to the public for the first time ever! Hop on over and check it out....and maybe buy yourself a print....or two....or three. Click here.

My favorite is this number:

The original hangs on a wall in my mother's house. I can remember being a child and studying this painting. I loved everything about it; the rolling green hills, the trotting horses, the whimsical trees, and a dirt road leading off to a little house where I am sure there must have been a homemade pie baking in the oven.

In all honesty, I felt a twinge of sadness when I saw that this was one of the prints available. It holds a special place in my heart and I wasn't sure I wanted it made public. However, I now realize that it would be a shame to keep this treasure hidden from the world. After all, art is to be shared and enjoyed.

My grandpa was a world traveller. In his art studio there was a map where he drew lines from Los Angeles to every destination that he travelled. It was COVERED in lines. I was inspired. I knew that one day I too would have a map; and I do. Mine only has a few lines of course, but there is time. I imagine that most of my travelling will happen after the girls graduate. Donald and I will spend our golden years exploring the world....with Elisabeth by our side, of course.

But back to my grandfather. Many of his paintings are of his travels. I think that you might really enjoy this one:

And especially this one:

(Inspired by his vacation to Antarctica.
I told you...he travelled everywhere!)

I love it! Olivia and I watched Pinocchio yesterday and I pointed out his name in the credits and told her it was your grandpa... she was impressed.

While I do like the paintings on the website... my favorite ones are in your private collection (thank you Alexandra for the post!)... I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Dumbo print. It was Olivia's very first and favorite ride the first time we went to Disneyland. You have to let me know if that picture ever becomes available because I know I would buy it and incorporate it into a frame with our Dumbo/Disney memories.

one of the all-time tragedies is that my very own 'Claude Coats original,' a drawing of Bruges, Belgium, got water damage. oh well.

I had viewed your grandpa's art work after Donald posted about it on his FB a little while back. The painting you wrote about- the rolling hills, the trotting horses- that was my favorite of all the pictures too.

Even after hearing about your grandpa several times it still gives me chills. You can definetely see the Disney style in his artwork! I love it. But I love more that you have such a rich history in your family.

I just read his biography, and what a neat story! How fun for your family to have that legacy! I love the penguins!

That's so incredible Lisa, what an awesome thing for your family. How neat that your girls can see these things and know it's great-grandpa.

I know that our family takes pride in Claude Coats. I know we aren't really related to him, but we have you and that's our connection I guess. When we go to Disneyland we always pay homage to what he did. We find the stuff that he left his mark on. We pay our respects to two windows in Main Street. :)

What talent he had! I see where your creativity comes from!

I too love the painting of the green hills. Beautiful!

My grandpa was an artist too, he was stationed in CA during WWII and was offered a job as an artist out there but wouldn't leave his home state of West Virginia. My Grandma was mad about that until the day she died!
I have a picture of a man with horses that he drew for me and he incorporated my name into the photo.

What a wonderful legacy! And his art, too! (I, of course, meant his children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.)

This is fabulous, Lisa. I will visit the online gallery and hope that I can bring some of his art to my home, too.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE all things Disney and so your grandfather is mega cool to me! I had already checked out the website and I really do think the Taj Mahal is my favorite one. It's just that I have seen so many pics of it, but never one like that!

I explored your grandfather's collection online a couple of weeks ago through a link on David's blog. My mom and stepdad were going to Disneyland (Easter weekend) and I wanted her to see some of his work. I got lost in all the beautiful paintings!

What an amazing story and, clearly, amazing man, too! My mom travels like he did and her favorite place she's every been is Antarctia. I may get her a print of that. Shoot, I may get one for myself too. He's a very talented artist, and as someone else said, you can see the Disney style in his work. I love it, thanks for sharing!
